My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I really enjoyed this book. It told of a group of book nerds that made a substantial contribution to the Allied effort in World War II.
Well written, it wasn’t as dry and academic as some of the other books I’ve read on this same topic.
The final chapter has a section on the downside to the recent cancellation of humanities programs at colleges and universities across the United States. We need all kinds of people: engineers, computer scientists and coders, financial experts – and we also need generalists. We need people who are comfortable reading deeply, who have a knowledge of history and literature and the arts. These folks made a large contribution in last century’s second world war. They are capable of making large contributions now too, during peacetime.
